Endorsement Policy

Adopted June 24, 2025

In accordance with AELAQ’s bylaws, the Board of Directors “speak(s) for the common interests of constituent members to all levels of government and to public and private institutions” (By-laws, Article 2.1 c) ). In this vein, all member requests for AELAQ endorsement or support (whether in the context of a book ban, censorship, political concern, or otherwise) will be submitted to the Board of Directors for approval, according to the following procedure:

  1. A request is submitted in writing by a member press for AELAQ endorsement or support, either for them, or for one of their authors.
  2. The Board considers the request and how it aligns with organizational values (community, cultural leadership, creativity, adaptability and integrity) as well as potential impacts on English-language publishers in Quebec and literary culture. As an association that represents all members, AELAQ will also consider whether there is broad consensus among members on the particular request.
  3. If the majority of Board members (minimum ⅔) agree that support should be offered, an AELAQ statement will be created and disseminated as appropriate, depending on circumstances. If the Board does not agree that support should be offered, a written explanation will be provided to the member.
