In accordance with AELAQ’s bylaws, the Board of Directors “speak(s) for the common interests of constituent members to all levels of government and to public and private institutions” (By-laws, Article 2.1 c) ). In this vein, all member requests for AELAQ endorsement or support (whether in the context of a book ban, censorship, political concern, or otherwise) will be submitted to the Board of Directors for approval, according to the following procedure:
- A request is submitted in writing by a member press for AELAQ endorsement or support, either for them, or for one of their authors.
- The Board considers the request and how it aligns with organizational values (community, cultural leadership, creativity, adaptability and integrity) as well as potential impacts on English-language publishers in Quebec and literary culture. As an association that represents all members, AELAQ will also consider whether there is broad consensus among members on the particular request.
- If the majority of Board members (minimum ⅔) agree that support should be offered, an AELAQ statement will be created and disseminated as appropriate, depending on circumstances. If the Board does not agree that support should be offered, a written explanation will be provided to the member.
