AELAQ at the National Assembly of Québec

During the month of September, the National Assembly of Québec’s Committee on Culture and Education held special consultations and public hearings on the regulation of retail prices of new printed and digital books; the AELAQ was invited to present its views on the issue to the hearing committee. Board member Robin Philpot traveled to Québec City to speak with the committee on behalf of the AELAQ.

COURS ÉCRIRE TON COURT screenwriting competition devoted to Quebec literature

The 2013 edition of SODEC’s COURS ÉCRIRE TON COURT screenwriting competition is exclusively devoted to the adaptation of Quebec literature. It presents a unique opportunity for up-and-coming screenwriters and directors who are eligible SODEC’s ‘Programme d’aide aux jeunes créateurs’ to develop a short film based on a literary work by a Quebec author. Selected applicants will benefit from professional mentoring, writing workshops, and ongoing discussions with established screenwriting professionals to develop their screenplay.

Projects must be submitted by individuals, not businesses or organizations. Applicants may submit only one project proposal. Projects may be submitted in French or English. Applications should include the first draft of a screenplay —with dialogue— for a short feature or animated film of 12 minutes or less, adapted from the work of a Quebec author.

Update on Lac-Mégantic Library

The project to revitalize Lac-Mégantic’s library is underway!

As many of you may know, the construction of a new building to house Lac-Mégantic’s library had begun before the devastating train derailment occurred. This new library building is almost complete, and library officials expect to take occupancy in September.

While the stinging loss of the community’s historical archives cannot be allayed, there is a great outpouring of support from the literary community to rebuild the library’s book collection. Because the central focus of Lac-Mégantic’s library is French-language literacy, library officials mainly want to rebuild their collection of French books but are pleased to receive some English books as well. Otherwise, financial contributions would be greatly appreciated.

Financial contributions can be made to the FONDATION DES AMIS DE LA BIBLIOTHÈQUE DE LAC-MÉGANTIC and are to be sent to one of the two following addresses:

  • 3558, rue Président-Kennedy, Lac-Mégantic, Québec G6B 2W5
  • 3974, rue Baie-des-sables, Lac-Mégantic, Québec G6B 1R6

Books may be sent to:

Distribution HMH
1815, avenue De Lorimier
Montréal (Qc) H2K 3W6
Att. : Monsieur Robert Cotton, directeur de l’entrepôt
